Below the castle at Muthill lies one of Scotland’s grandest formal gardens: a vast terraced parterre whose paths trace a St Andrew’s cross around a sundial dating from 1630. You look down on the whole pattern from a terrace before walking into it. The gardens open seasonally, roughly Easter and May to October, with an admission charge. Note the castle itself isn’t open to visitors.
