The tall, tapering tower rising over Muthill is Romanesque work of the 11th or 12th century, once free-standing and later wrapped by a 15th-century church that’s now roofless. It’s one of a small family of such towers in this corner of Perthshire. Historic Environment Scotland looks after the ruin, which is open and free, with an old cross-slab and a carved effigy of an Earl of Strathearn kept inside. Gleneagles station is about 9km away.
