Wanstead Park is what’s left of the grounds of Wanstead House, one of the grandest Georgian mansions in England, pulled down for its building materials in 1824 after its owner gambled the family fortune away. The house is gone, but the landscaped lakes, an 18th-century grotto and stretches of ancient woodland survive, now cared for by the City of London Corporation as part of Epping Forest. It’s free and open at any reasonable hour, with a small visitor centre in the Temple building on some weekends. Leytonstone High Road station is under 2km west.
