Charles II had the French designer André Le Nôtre lay out this hillside above the Thames in the 1660s, and the formal grass “Grand Ascent” climbing to the Royal Observatory still traces his plan. It’s London’s oldest enclosed royal park, free and open at all reasonable hours, with sweeping views over the river and Canary Wharf from the top. The Thames Path runs along its northern edge. Maze Hill station is right on the doorstep, about 0.6km away.
