Opened in 1845 for the benefit of the East End’s working class, Victoria Park in Bow was London’s first public park and is still known locally as “the People’s Park” — a name it earned as a site for political rallies and public speeches through the Victorian era and beyond. It’s a proper size, 85 hectares of lakes, sports pitches and tree-lined avenues, with the Regent’s Canal running along its southern edge. Free to walk in at any time. Homerton station is about a kilometre north.
