One of London’s “Magnificent Seven” Victorian cemeteries, Nunhead opened in 1840 on a south London hillside and quickly filled with grand monuments to the city’s great and good. Much of it has since gone wild, and the avenues of limes and tangled undergrowth now shelter white-letter hairstreak butterflies alongside the graves. It’s free to wander any day of the year, and the Friends of Nunhead Cemetery run free guided tours on the last Sunday of the month. The Green Chain Walk passes right by, and Nunhead station is just up the road.
