Eltham Palace splices two eras together: a surviving 1470s medieval Great Hall, where Henry VIII spent part of his childhood, grafted onto a lavish 1930s Art Deco mansion built for the millionaire Courtauld family. Inside, the entrance hall and Virginia Courtauld’s suite of rooms are as striking as the architecture gets in England for that decade. Run by English Heritage, it’s open regular days through the year with an admission charge, gardens included. Mottingham station is under a kilometre away.
