Stansted Park has stood in this corner of the Hampshire-Sussex border since Norman hunting-ground days, though the current house is Edwardian: it was rebuilt in classical style between 1900 and 1903 after fire destroyed the previous building. The last private owner left the 1,800-acre estate to a charitable trust in 1983, and it’s now run for public benefit. The house and chapel open Sunday to Tuesday afternoons from Easter to September; the walled garden, arboretum and farm shop stay open all year. Rowlands Castle is a short walk away.
