Penllergare was the private valley garden of John Dillwyn Llewelyn, the Victorian botanist and pioneering photographer, who dammed the stream into a lake and cascade and built an observatory here around 1851. Long neglected, it has been steadily restored since 2010 and reopened as free woodland walks north of Swansea. Gowerton station is about 4km to the south-west.
