Highgate Cemetery opened in 1839, one of seven grand Victorian burial grounds built to relieve London’s overflowing churchyards, and it’s since become the most visited of them by far. Karl Marx is buried on the East side, his monument drawing a steady stream of visitors, with George Eliot and Douglas Adams among the neighbours. Entry is by timed ticket, self-guided or on a tour, split between the older West Cemetery and the newer East side. The Capital Ring footpath passes close by if you want to extend the walk.
