London’s first crematorium, opened in 1902, is as much a garden as a place of remembrance: William Robinson laid out the grounds with rose beds, a lily pond and mature trees around Sir Ernest George’s buildings. The memorial gardens are open to anyone, free, every day of the year, and the columbarium here is one of the largest in Europe. Cricklewood station is about 2.4km south-west.
