Grovelands Park in Southgate began life as the landscaped grounds of a John Nash-designed house, laid out by Humphry Repton in the 1790s. Enfield Council opened it to the public in 1913 and it’s stayed free ever since, with a lake, a former boating island now given over to waterbirds, tennis courts and a pitch-and-putt course. Trent Park, another Repton-landscaped estate, is a couple of miles north if you fancy more of the same.
