Chiswick House is a Palladian villa built in the 1720s by the 3rd Earl of Burlington, modelled on ideas he’d picked up on his grand tour of Italy. William Kent laid out the surrounding gardens soon after, breaking from formal parterres into a looser, natural style that’s widely credited as the start of the English landscape movement. The gardens are free to roam daily from 7am, and the house keeps shorter hours, Thursday to Sunday, with a ticket. Ham House, another Thames-side property, is a few kilometres upstream.
