Syon Park has been the Percy family’s London home since 1594, and the Duke of Northumberland still lives at Syon House today. Capability Brown reworked the 200-acre grounds in the 1750s and 60s, sweeping away formal gardens for open lawns and a serpentine lake. The Great Conservatory, added in the 1830s, was Britain’s first large-scale building in cast iron and glass, and a direct influence on Joseph Paxton’s Crystal Palace two decades later. House and gardens open seasonally, mid-March to the end of October, with a ticket — the gardens alone open on more days than the house. Osterley Park, another grand house a few miles north, makes a good pairing for the day.
