London’s oldest botanic garden, Chelsea Physic Garden was founded in 1673 by the Society of Apothecaries to train apprentices in identifying medicinal plants. Behind its Thames-side walls sit around 4,500 species, from a rock garden to glasshouses of tender exotics. It’s ticketed and open most days through the year, though closed on Saturdays. Carlyle’s House, home of the Victorian writer, is a short walk west.
