The Queen’s Gallery aside, most of Buckingham Palace stays firmly private — except for a stretch each summer, when the State Rooms open to visitors. Expect gilded ballrooms, a run of paintings and furniture from the Royal Collection, and a walk through part of the garden behind the palace. Tickets are timed and worth booking ahead; queues form early regardless. Victoria station, the nearest, is a short walk south. Trafalgar Square and the Thames Path are both within easy reach on foot.
