A thin ribbon of green squeezed between the Strand and the Thames, Victoria Embankment Gardens opened in 1875 on land reclaimed when Joseph Bazalgette built his great sewer and embankment along the river. Office workers still eat lunch here among the flowerbeds and statues, and a bandstand dating from 1953 hosts concerts through the summer. It’s free, open long hours every day, and run by Westminster City Council. Trafalgar Square is a short walk west, or follow the Thames Path which runs right along its edge.
