Bedford Square is the best-preserved Georgian square in London, its four terraces built from 1775 to 1783 to a design largely by Thomas Leverton, each side dressed up to look like one grand townhouse. The central garden is locked behind railings and reserved for keyholding residents — but it opens to everyone one weekend a year for Open Garden Squares Weekend, when you can finally walk the oval lawn under the plane trees.
