Come in spring, ideally March or April: this is a woodland garden bred for magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons, and it holds the national collection of magnolias, over 600 kinds. The battlemented castle above it was designed by John Nash around 1810 and has been the Williams family’s home since 1853; it was a Williams who raised the celebrated williamsii camellias here. A private estate on the Roseland coast near Gorran, with the gardens open in spring only.
