The Tremayne family’s Victorian gardens near Mevagissey slid into neglect after the First World War took most of their gardeners. Tim Smit and a small team cut them back out of the brambles in the early 1990s, in what became one of the largest garden restorations in Europe. What you get now: walled flower gardens, a steamy jungle valley of tree ferns, and the moss-covered Mud Maid. Open every day of the year, with an admission charge; St Austell station is about 6km north.
