The Evelyn Gardens at Albury Park are what survives of a much grander 17th-century scheme laid out for Henry Howard, 6th Duke of Norfolk, with input from the diarist and garden designer John Evelyn. A long yew-flanked terrace, a tunnel cut into the hillside and a domed bath house all remain, later planted up with exotic trees by Henry Drummond. They open only a couple of days a year for the National Garden Scheme — check the estate’s website before visiting. Shere and Silent Pool are both close by.
