St James’ in Shere is a Grade I Norman church at the heart of the village, best known for the cell of a medieval anchoress built into its north wall. You can still see the squint and quatrefoil she watched the altar through. Open to visitors, with the White Horse a few doors along. Gomshall station is about 1.5km east.
