Talisker is Skye’s oldest working distillery, founded at Carbost in 1830 and standing right on the shore of Loch Harport. It’s the island’s only distillery for peaty single malt, and the visitor centre runs tours and tastings through the year (booking ahead is wise in summer). Well worth pairing with a walk out to Talisker Bay, a couple of miles west, which shares the name but not the location.

A big waterfall — the literal meaning of its Gaelic name — dropping through a deep, sheer gorge on the Allt Coire Banachdich, high in Glen Brittle beneath the western Black Cuillin. Reached only on foot up the river, with the ridge filling the skyline above.
