What looks like a big village church is really the surviving nave of Thorney Abbey, a wealthy Benedictine house on what was once a fen island. The Norman west front and arcades still stand; the rest came down after the Dissolution. It now serves Thorney, later rebuilt as a model estate village by the dukes of Bedford. Usually open by day.
