St Michael's Church, Garton-on-the-Wolds
From outside, St Michael’s looks a plain Norman church of about 1132; step in and the walls and ceiling blaze with Victorian biblical murals, painted at the expense of the Sykes family of Sledmere. There are richly patterned floors and Cosmati-style mosaics too — one of the finest of the decorated Sykes estate churches. It stands just off the main road through the village; Driffield station is about 5km away.
