Howden Minster is really two buildings in one: a working parish church in the nave, and behind it the roofless shell of a great medieval choir and chapter house, now in the care of English Heritage. The choir vault came down in 1696 and the chapter house followed in 1750, leaving the soaring ruins you can walk among today. It began as a collegiate church back in the 1260s. Free to visit; Howden station is a couple of kilometres north.
