St Maelrubha founded a monastery at Applecross in 672, making this one of the early strongholds of the church in the west of Scotland. The present Clachan Church dates from 1817, but its churchyard still holds a tall, unfinished cross-slab from those first centuries, with more finely carved fragments kept inside. It stands at Clachan in Applecross, and the churchyard is open to walk round.
