The roofless kirk at Alloway is where Burns set the witches’ dance in Tam o’ Shanter, and it stands a short walk from the poet’s birthplace in Alloway. His father, William Burnes, lies buried in the graveyard. The ruin is free to wander at any time, one stop on the trail linking the Burns sights on the southern edge of Ayr. Ayr station is about 3km north.
