Robert Burns was born in Alloway in 1759, and the village on the southern edge of Ayr is the heart of Burns country. The Burns Birthplace Museum, his father’s thatched cottage, the Auld Kirk of Tam o’ Shanter and the humpbacked Brig o’ Doon all sit within a short walk of each other. A leafy conservation village, free to wander, about 3km from Ayr station.
