Substantial ruinsruined, but plenty survives above ground

Across the stream from St Davids Cathedral, the bishops built themselves something just as showy. Henry de Gower ran it up in the 1330s and 40s, and the ruin still carries his signature — an arcaded parapet round the courtyard ranges, chequered in purple Caerbwdi stone, with over 130 carved corbels propping the arches, a good many of them grotesques. The great hall below is roofless, its porch and wheel window still standing. Cadw charge admission and open it daily. Worth doing alongside the cathedral rather than instead of it.
