Substantial ruinsruined, but plenty survives above ground
Milton Keynes grew up around Bradwell, a small Benedictine priory of the 12th century, and one building of it survives complete: the 14th-century chapel of St Mary, put up for pilgrims visiting a statue of the Virgin said to heal. Its medieval wall paintings are reckoned to be the only ones in England showing pilgrims kneeling at a shrine. No services are held now: the site runs as the Milton Keynes City Discovery Centre, and the chapel is unlocked for guided tours and open days, so check dates before setting off. Wolverton station is two kilometres north, the Grand Union Canal in between.
