A compact old market town tucked under the wooded Chiltern escarpment, with narrow lanes and a 17th-century town hall raised on pillars in the middle. Above it, the Watlington white mark is a tall chalk triangle cut into the hill in the 1760s, set to line up with the church tower and stand in for a spire. The Ridgeway and the Chiltern beechwoods are on the doorstep.
