Richmond guards the mouth of Swaledale, a handsome town of Georgian houses around a huge cobbled marketplace, all watched over by a great Norman castle keep above the river. The Georgian Theatre Royal, built in 1788, is among the oldest working theatres in Britain and still stages shows in its original playhouse. The Swale tumbles over falls right below the town. Reeth lies up the dale.
