The Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond opened in 1788 and is among the oldest working theatres in the country still in something close to its original form. It runs a full programme of shows, and by day you can take a guided tour and see the museum, which holds a rare set of early painted stage scenery. Both tours and performances are ticketed. Darlington is the nearest mainline station, about 18km north-east.
