Port of Menteith looks out over the Lake of Menteith, often called Scotland’s only ‘lake’. From the pier a small ferry runs across to Inchmahome Priory, the ruined island monastery where the four-year-old Mary, Queen of Scots was hidden for safety in 1547. There’s a lochside hotel, and the lake is well known among fly fishers. Quiet and low-key.
