The war poet Wilfred Owen was born at Plas Wilmot in Oswestry in 1893, and the town has claimed him ever since. It’s a border market town with a knot of medieval streets, and on its northern edge stands Old Oswestry, one of the best-preserved Iron Age hillforts in the country — a huge ring of grassed ramparts free to walk. Gobowen station, a few miles north, is the nearest railhead.
