Ellesmere sits on the bank of the largest of the North Shropshire meres — glacial lakes left as the last ice sheet melted — which is why the area gets called Shropshire’s Lake District. The Mere covers around 46 hectares, with a lakeside walk, rowing boats and a heronry on its island. Behind it the town is a tidy stop on the Llangollen Canal.
