Cuckfield is a hilltop Wealden town with an old high street of independent shops and coaching inns. By local tradition the main London–Brighton railway passed it by, running through Haywards Heath instead in the 1840s, which left Cuckfield quiet and little changed. Lindfield is close by. Haywards Heath station is about 2.5km east.
