Colonel Stephenson Clarke bought Borde Hill in the 1890s and spent decades funding plant-hunting expeditions to China, Burma and the Andes, and their finds still fill the garden’s thirteen outdoor “rooms” — rare rhododendrons, magnolias and champion trees around an Elizabethan mansion. It’s a registered charity now, with the garden and parkland open daily from February to December for an admission charge, plus woodland trails, a play area and a café. Wakehurst Place is a few miles north.
