A woodland and water garden on the Sussex Weald, begun by Colonel Giles Loder in the early 1900s and still holding the National Collection of stewartia. Paths wind past ponds and a wildflower meadow that turns properly glorious with orchids in early summer, though the ground is unmade and uneven, so wear proper boots. It’s open from late March to the end of October, ticketed, with Nymans a short drive south-west for a second garden the same day.
