Church Stretton grew as a Victorian resort under the heather wall of the Long Mynd, and was marketed as ‘Little Switzerland’ in its heyday. It still works best as a walkers’ base: Carding Mill Valley cuts into the hill on the town’s doorstep, with the open plateau and Pole Bank on the tops above. Trains stop right in the centre.
