Beauly is a handsome market village built around a long, broad square, with a good scatter of independent shops and cafés and a station on the line up from Inverness. At the north end stand the extensive ruins of Beauly Priory, founded around 1230 for the Valliscaulian order and free to wander. The name is said to come from the French beau lieu, beautiful place.
