Iconic dip on Hadrian's Wall (tree felled 2023).
Approximate location — this spot is pinned to the nearest village, so the exact point may be a little way off.
For decades a single sycamore stood in a perfect dip in the crags here, the most photographed tree on Hadrian’s Wall, until it was illegally felled overnight in September 2023 — two men were later jailed for it. The stump has since put out fresh shoots, and the National Trust has fenced it to let it recover. The gap itself remains a striking landmark, reached on foot from Steel Rigg or Housesteads. Don’t come expecting the tree, but the walk along the crags is superb.
