The Pheasant Inn is an ivy-clad 17th-century country inn at Stannersburn, about a mile short of Kielder Water where forest meets the national park. Low beams, open fires and rooms in the old byres make it a lovely base for walking or cycling the reservoir shore. The Blackcock Inn at Falstone is close by. It’s deep country; the nearest station, Bardon Mill, is over 20km south.
