Tom Spring, bare-knuckle champion of England in the 1820s, was born at Fownhope and is remembered at the Green Man, the rambling black-and-white coaching inn at the village centre. It’s claimed to date from 1485, with low oak beams throughout, and makes a comfortable walking base with food and rooms. The village of Fownhope sits below Capler Camp near the Wye.
