Beinn a’ Bhuird is a Munro — a Scottish hill over 3,000 feet (914m) — of 1,196m in the northern Cairngorms, and the name, “hill of the table”, fits the broad flat top exactly. The summit is a wide stony tableland, but the eastern side is cut into steep corries (bowl-shaped hollows scooped out by ice), with crags and long snow patches that can last well into summer. It’s a remote hill, usually climbed with its neighbour Ben Avon across the high pass between them, and the walk in from Deeside or the Mar Lodge Estate near Braemar is long from any side. The plateau is a serious place to navigate in poor weather.
