St Dwynwen’s day is still marked across Wales on 25 January, with cards and flowers much like Valentine’s, for the patron saint of lovers whose ruined church stands on Llanddwyn Island, Ynys Llanddwyn in Welsh. At the tip, two lighthouses stand above the rocks, with views across to Eryri and the Llŷn, near a row of restored pilots’ cottages that once housed the men who guided ships through the Menai Strait. The taller of the two, Twr Mawr Llanddwyn Lighthouse, was built in 1845 and modelled on an Anglesey windmill. The walk out from Newborough Beach is only safe around low tide, so check the safe crossing times before you set out. Bodorgan Station is the nearest, about 7km north.
