Low and flat, Benbecula sits between North Uist and South Uist, joined to both by causeway. The northern one runs past Grimsay; the southern one opened in 1982. Balivanich, the main village, takes its name from an early monastery; today it’s known for the airport, with flights to Glasgow and Stornoway. RAF Benbecula, built alongside it in the Second World War, later controlled a Cold War missile-testing range that stretched towards St Kilda.
Near Creagorry, the ruin of Borve Castle stands on machair, flower-rich grassland typical of the Hebridean coast; the tower was built in the 14th century for Amy MacRuairi, wife of the Lord of the Isles, and was held by Clan Ranald until the Jacobite rising of 1715. West-facing beaches run the length of the island. At Gramsdale, a converted salmon-processing shed now houses Benbecula Distillery, which produced its first spirit in 2024.
