At Howmore (Tobha Mòr) on the west side of South Uist stands a cluster of ruined medieval chapels and burial grounds, parts of it thought to go back to around 1200. Freely open and a short walk from the village and its surviving thatched houses, it’s one of the more evocative early-Christian sites in the isles.
