Howmore (Tobha Mòr) is a rare survival — a township of traditional thatched cottages on the west coast of South Uist, a few still lived in and one run as an SYHA hostel. Beside them stands a cluster of ruined medieval chapels, once an important religious site. It’s a short walk on to a broad machair beach. Signed off the A865 on the island’s west side.
